Tennis is a sport that manages to traverse to video games quite well, especially when they focus on the arcade-like nature of the sport to make it viable for anyone who wishes to jump into the game for the first time. There are a wide variety of different tennis games you play on your iOS or Android device, but after putting some major time investment into Ultimate Tennis, it seems that the name is rather applicable, as it’s one of the most enjoyable tennis games currently out on the mobile market – for a number of different reasons.
Even though the controls can be easily switched out at a moment’s notice, the pair of them manage to work quite well of their own accord. Ultimately, I do feel that the two-handed method results in some better play, but that’s down to the fact that your movement gets the chance to be separated from your returns and hits that you make against the tennis ball. With this, the player gains access to a joystick and a small circle that depending on where you lead it to, will result in a different strike; such as a lob or a slice. When you go against the AI, one-handed does the job just fine, but you’ll come to notice that your gameplay might be lacking against real people in PVP without the use of the two-handed control scheme.
PVP is an element of this game that took me by surprise, as it didn’t seem like something that would be implemented particularly well. When playing on mobile, you expect to feel some sort of latency for a competitive game of this nature, but it’s quite pleasing to say that Ultimate Tennis manages it near perfectly. Throughout all of the matches that have been experienced whilst online, I’ve encountered very few issues that just lead to a more satisfying online system that can be rather difficult to walk away from when you find yourself starting to get hooked to the game.
Due to the inclusion of RPG elements – something you might not initially expect in a sports game – there’s a lot of extra replay value. By changing out your clothing, racket, and a few other extras, your stats will change accordingly to match with the brand new gear. The game even offers skills and abilities that can be upgraded to land some serious impact after they’ve received a decent amount of upgrades. As far as tennis games go, these sorts of RPG elements are quite surprising to see, but it’s something that after playing with for a little while you’ll come to see how much more the game would be lacking without its inclusion.
From a graphical perspective, Ultimate Tennis doesn’t exactly have the greatest fidelity, but it does have some redeeming factors in that regard. For instance, the animations across the board are great and make each and every successful swing of that racket all the more satisfying to both watch as well as take part in. Such a nice feature, however, is dragged down by the overall graphics that looks really quite dated for a title that was released in late 2015. Graphics may not be a great aspect of the game in general, but the high-quality animations make sure to keeps its fidelity a lot higher than it would be if they were as subpar as the aesthetics are.
When you look at the game as an overall package, there may be a few aspects that drag the game down to some degree – like the graphics – the rest of the game is really quite deserving of its name.
